ING Commercial Banking
Creating a design system
What initially started out as a proof of concept for a dashboard, turned into a 2,5 year project. During this period of time we created an entire new design system for ING's Commercial Banking internal tooling.
One of my first big projects for TamTam (now Dept) was to help design an entire new design system for ING Commercial Banking. It turned out a great way for me to take a deep dive into interaction and usability aspects of digital design.

The project started with a proof of concept. This concept should prove if it would be possible to combine and display many sources of information into one user friendly dashboard. This dashboard would help employees of ING to get insight into their customer data and give practical tooling for their day to day workflow. They apparently liked it so much, that they asked us to do a re-think and re-design much of their internal tooling.
All the content on this project is still considered as confidential. Therefore I unfortunately can't show you much more than this one conceptual design.

A fully documented design system
For the re-design of their internal tooling we needed a structured approach. The scale of all the re-design turned out so immense that just delivering a few templates and components just wouldn't do the job. We needed a proper design system. This design system would ensure all elements were designed in a consistent matter, and to provide the bank with the necessary guidelines to build it with.

All the UI-patterns we designed over time were documented together with functional and behavorial specifications. The documentation came in two versions. An interactive pattern library, which could be used to see and feel all the interactions and behaviors. And a written version which contained every spec and functional specification. Over time the design system grew to be one of the most complete and detailed digital design systems I've seen in my career until now.

Once the tooling and design for the web application was in place we continued designingon the same kind of tooling. This time for a native iOS and native Android app, for both tablet and mobile. Because this time we already knew what type of functionalities were coming, we could focus more on the native components and navigation, that comes with the iOS and Android design systems.

Working on a project of this scale and complexity, really raised the bar for me in the early stages of my career. Up until today I still profit from all the experience and knowledge I gained during my 2 years working on this project.
